Our Story

Akam foundation

Akam Foundation is a transgender-led, not-for-profit organization registered under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013. Established in 2022, the word Akam means equality in the Mising language, spoken by Assam’s second-largest tribal community. True to its name, equality and justice are the core values that guide everything we do.

We work to empower transgender and queer communities in north-east India, especially in rural and semi-urban regions, through a range of grassroots programs.
